And coming now in Widescreen DVD treatment, this movie has been a long wait coming and worth every penny ! Also coming with bonus' 'Tribute with Douglas, his son Michael, Gena Rowlands and fan Steven Spielberg'. From the opening scenes of the aircraft flying overhead to the shattering and stunning final, all the planets aligned for the making of this movie. And coming from an unchangable script by the great Dalton Trumbo, everything falls into perfect place. The black and white photography, film score and direction are dead on fantastic. Gene Rowlands as his best friends wife and confident and Walter Matthau as the sheriff in pursuit of Douglas after he breaks out of jail. Douglas is superb as the cowboy out of his time (his horse, Whiskey, as Douglas says in the extras, steals the show). A cowboy out of his time trying to hold onto the old values makes a striking commentary to the times (then and NOW, as it turns out). And that he made at the pinnacle of his acting powers makes this a great neo-western. It may not be his BEST, but you can tell it is his most personal. It is also his son Michael's favorite that his father did. This is Kirk Douglas' favorite movie that he starred in.
